CSA Ocean Sciences Inc. (CSA) is a marine science and technical services consulting firm that provides a broad range of environmental, coastal, and oceanographic services in the U.S. and internationally. We are seeking a part-time, seasonal (approximately April-September) marine biologist or marine science technician to support field surveys requiring scientific diving. CSA expects adherence to our robust internal standards for science, operations, health and safety, quality, and professionalism. Applicants should be working toward or have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree program in either marine sciences (e.g., marine biology, marine ecology, biological oceanography, environmental chemistry) or related field and have open water SCUBA certification. This position will be based out of our Stuart, Florida office.

Position Summary:

The successful applicant will support CSA projects by participating in field surveys (primarily those requiring scientific diving), data entry and QA/QC, equipment maintenance, small boat operations, and other project support as needed. An understanding of field sampling in the marine environment with benthic marine flora and fauna identification skills is recommended. The successful applicant must have strong organizational and teamwork skills. This position requires periodic domestic and international travel, often at short notice and on weekends, during both daytime and nighttime shifts if at sea, and potentially for prolonged periods (several weeks).

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Supporting the quality, validity, and accuracy of project science;
  • Participation in nearshore and offshore sampling surveys, potentially international and sometimes with prolonged deployment, often at sea both day and night;
  • Assist with data collection by conducting field surveys including measurements, recording data, and collecting quantitative video and still photographs;
  • Performing data entry and quality assurance;
  • Adhering to company standards and procedures for scientific diving, data collection, quality control, and health, safety, security, and the environment (HSSE);
  • Being accountable and responsible for personal safety and safety of others;
  • Attending safety meetings and satisfactory completion of assigned training and safety meetings as applicable; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Coursework toward or completion of B.Sc. in marine science, biology, ecology, or a related field;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently but also as part of a close-knit team;
  • Open water SCUBA certification;
  • Scientific diving experience or AAUS certification;
  • Experience with environmental sampling equipment, small boats, or offshore vessels;
  • Familiarity with benthic marine and estuarine habitats and taxonomic identification skills; and
  • Possession of a valid U.S. Driver’s license.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Advanced open water or rescue diver certification(s);
  • First Aid, CPR, and O2 administration certifications;
  • Previous health, safety, and/or environmental hazard training;
