CSA Ocean Sciences Inc. (CSA) provides environmental, geophysical, and geotechnical services to the offshore energy industry (oil, gas, and wind) in the US and internationally. We specialize in addressing regulatory and environmental requirements while meeting the engineering and logistical constraints of offshore energy development. For more than five decades, CSA’s experts in marine science and operations have examined environmental risks and potential impacts of exploration and production activities in offshore and deepwater settings in the US and internationally.

Applying our knowledge of domestic and international regulations, CSA designs and implements environmental impact studies, scientifically sound sampling and assessment programs, rigorous data analysis, and strict quality assurance and quality control standards. We specialize in baseline surveys, habitat characterization, monitoring studies, impact assessments, mitigation, and restoration.

CSA’s experts assist the offshore energy industry with environmental preparedness, oil spill response planning, and damage assessments. CSA participates in response exercises, examines modeling studies, prepares and executes monitoring plans, and prepares applications for approval of dispersant use when a viable tactic.

CSA’s subject matter expertise also includes marine geomatics, ocean sound and marine life, acoustic modeling and monitoring, and metocean data collection.

Extensive Oil & Gas Experience

Since 1970, CSA has provided expert consulting services integrating environmental and social impact studies for domestic and international clients. Our clients include oil & gas operators, government agencies, and internal finance corporations in more than 76 countries. Principal areas of CSA expertise are further described below.

  • Evaluation of baseline conditions is a crucial component of offshore exploration and development projects. CSA documents potentially sensitive resources to provide a reference point to evaluate future changes in coastal, nearshore, offshore, and deepwater habitats.
  • Performance of impact assessments to identify environmental consequences early in the project planning and design process to facilitate prevention and mitigation of adverse impacts. In the US, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) provides a formal mechanism for public stakeholders and non-government organizations to participate in the decision-making processes involving environmental issues. CSA has developed hundreds of NEPA documents, impact assessments, and related permitting documents.
  • Mitigation, management, and monitoring of impacts associated with oil & gas activities are key services provided by CSA. We examine regulations, incorporate best practices, and develop mitigation measures for potential impacts including realistic, feasible, and cost-effective measures to prevent or reduce significant negative impacts. Statistically valid monitoring programs are developed and employed to understand the effects of activities on the environment and the efficacy of mitigation measures.
