This video provides a compilation of CSA marine biologists conducting underwater monitoring of nearshore hardbottom resources off the east coast of Florida for several beach nourishment projects. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection requires that nearshore hardbottom monitoring be conducted before, during, and (for a certain number of years) following a beach nourishment project. As part of these monitoring efforts, CSA marine biologists assess percent cover of marine flora and fauna within quadrats, measure sediment depth on hardbottom, and map the edges of hardbottom features using a GPS buoy. The video also shows some of the various marine life comprising the nearshore hardbottom biological community, including algae, sponges, urchins, jellyfish, and sharks.
