CSA Scientist Discusses Marine Plastics on Earth Day
CSA marine biologist Jeffery Landgraf was invited by the organization Keeping Friendswood Beautiful (KFB) to give an Earth Day presentation on ocean plastics to local students.
KFB is a city board made up of 20 volunteers from the Friendswood, Texas community. They are dedicated to enhance the aesthetic appearance of Friendswood and to encourage residents to take an active role in maintaining that appearance. Mr. Landgraf met the group of students at Stevenson Park to discuss the types of plastics we find in our oceans, how plastics make it into our waterways, and how this impacts the marine environment. As part of the group presentation, students also learned about the types of materials that can be recycled and how to take an active role in reducing litter. They also learned about other impacts that plastics and synthetic debris have on our environment.
In addition to educational outreach events such as these, CSA scientists continue to support The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit group focused on developing advanced technologies to rid the oceans of plastic. CSA has provided services to The Ocean Cleanup since 2018, by helping to prepare Environmental Impact Assessment documentation and providing environmental support for their next mission.
