Sperm Whale Tracking in the Gulf of Mexico
With everyone quarantined, working from home, and field work limited, we thought we would bring back an “oldie but goodie”. The following digital project summary demonstrates CSA’s support to Oregon State University’s (OSU) Sperm Whale tagging efforts in the northern Gulf of Mexico, 2013.
The acoustic tracking project, led by CSA’s Marine Mammal Programs Manager, Mary Jo Barkaszi, provided acoustic support researchers from OSU’s Marine Mammal Institute to facilitate finding and localizing sperm whales so that satellite tags could be affixed leading to a better understanding of sperm whale populations and environmental stressors in the Gulf of Mexico. We at CSA are all anxious to get back out on the sea again, but until that time comes, enjoy some virtual at-sea memories.
